About the Artists:

Uday Bhawalkar  

Uday Bhawalkar is a standard bearer for Dhrupad, and a strong force in its growing recognition and popularity.  His journey began at the Dhrupad Kendra in Bhopal in 1981 under the tutelage of his Gurus, Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar  and the Rudra - Veena maestro Ustad Zia Moiuddin Dagar,  He lived and studied with them in Bhopal and Mumbai for 12 years.

He gave his first performance in 1985 and has performed ever since in many major music festivals in India and abroad.  He has also lent his voice to motion picture soundtracks. He is a proponent of the Guru-shishya parampara and teaches many students.  He has also conducted workshops in many parts of the world.

In 1987 Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar  blessed him with a gold medal.  He has been awarded the Kumar Gandharva Samman in 2001 by the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and the Raza Foundation award in 2006 by S H Raza, the famous painter.

He is also part of the panel of Gurus at ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata.  He lives in Pune with his family.


Pratap Awad


Pratap Awad was born in 1985 in Maharashtra. He learnt to play the Pakhawaj from Pandit Subhash Maharaj Deshmukh, Pandit Uddhav Aapegaonkar and Pandit Vasantrao Ghorpadkar.

Pratap has given solo performances and accompanies many Dhrupad musicians both in India and abroad. He is the recipient of several prestigious awards and scholarships and performs on TV and radio regularly.

The Recital Hall is located just behind the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium  in the campus of St. Catherine University (2004 Randolph Ave, Saint Paul, MN 55105). The Recital Hall is Building 24 in the campus map (see below).

Driving Directions: 

  • From I-94 going E: Take Cretin Avenue exit. South (right) on Cretin to Randolph Avenue. East (left) on Randolph to Cleveland Avenue intersection. Stay on Randolph. Enter at GATE 3 on Randolph.
  • From I-94 going W: Take Snelling Avenue (US 51) exit. South (left) on Snelling Avenue to Randolph. West (right) on Randoplh to Fairview/Randolph intersection. Stay on Randolph. Enter at GATE 3 on Randolph.
  • From I-35E: Exit on Randolph Avenue. Proceed West to Fairview/Randolph intersection. Stay on Randolph. Enter at GATE 3 on Randolph.
  • From I-35W: Exit on 94 eastbound to Cretin Avenue exit. South on Cretin to Randolph Avenue. East on Randolph to Cleveland Avenue intersection. Stay on Randolph. Enter at GATE 3 on Randolph.

Gate 3 is located between Cleveland and Fairview and is nearest to the intersection of Randolph and Prior Avenues. The Recital Hall is located right behind the better known O'Shaughnessy auditorium. Parking is free after hours and on weekends.
