Friday, September 24, 1999, 7:30 pm Venue: The Recital Hall About the artists: Shubha Mudgal's musical accomplishments are truly remarkable and today she is considered by many as one of the most imaginative and versatile female vocalists of India. Like most young vocalists, Shubha has received training from many. Born in Allahabad to a family with rich musical tradition, she began her training under Pandit Ram Ashray Jha, a highly respected teacher, composer and a Vidwan. She then received extensive guidance from both Vinay Chandra Maudgalya and Vasant Thakar. She was fortunate to come under the influence of Pandit Kumar Gandharva and Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, who gave her an understanding of stylistic techniques. Naina Devi was another stalwart that Shubha turned to for Thumri and Dadra. What you hear in a concert by Shubha Mudgal today is an aesthetic blend of musicality and styles of all these masters. It is because of the qualities that one leaves her concert with memories that last for la long time. Aneesh Pradhan started his training at an early age and became a disciple of the legendary maestro, the late Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. After several years of rigorous practice and guidance from his teacher, Aneesh has emerged as one of the most sought after Tabla players of the younger generation. Be it a vocal, instrumental or a classical dance performance, Aneesh’s accompaniment enlivens the atmosphere and encourages the main artist to reach greater heights. Aneesh has performed extensively in India and, with several celebrated artists has toured the UK, Australia, New Zealand, several countries of Europe and the U.S.A. He is on the visiting faculty of the University of Bombay as well as an artist in residence at the University of New England in Australia. Aneesh is a "A" grade artist of the All India Radio and is a regular performer on the Indian National Television. Sudheer Nayak is one of the most talented harmonium players in India. He trained under Pandit Tulsidas Borkar, who is by any measure a revered teacher and an outstanding performer and an innovator. He also received valuable guidance from the late Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, one of the most creative classical musicians of India. Sudheer stated accompanying vocalists when he was barely 16 years old. Since then he has accompanied leading vocalists, including Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Jasraj, Gangubai Hangal, Shobha Gurtu, Rashid Khan, Prabha Atre, Veena Sahasrabuddhe, Shruti Sadolikar, Arati Ankalikar, Malinibai Rajurkar, and Prabhakar Karekar.
