A musical tribute to the great composers of South Indian Classical Music
by
Twin Cities’ vocalists and instrumentalists
Saturday, June 3, 2000, 2:00 pm Venue: The Geeta Ashram About the program: The Indian classical music system of notes and scales is believed to date back to more than 2,000 years. Over the centuries, it has developed into an extensive musical system of expansive melodic forms and intricate rhythms. By the 14th century, it evolved into two distinctive systems - Hindusthani and Carnatic - representing northern and southern regions of India respectively. While Hindusthani was influenced by and assimilated Persian and Arabic music, Carnatic remained relatively free from such influences. The core values of Indian classical music, however, continue to be preserved in either form with strong emphasis on melody, spirituality, and subliminal union with Nature and God. Indian classical music lovers of the twin cities area are coming together, for the sixth consecutive year, to cherish the rich heritage of Carnatic music. Modeled after the tradition of Thyagaraja Aradhana, performed annually in Thiruvayyar, India, Aradhana-2000's main purpose is to pay homage and humble respect to Purandara Dasa(considered the Grand Father of Carnatic music), the trinity of Carnatic music(Saint Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Shyama Shastri) and other great composers by rendering their compositions. The program will feature well-trained Carnatic musicians of the twin cities area singing and playing instruments such as violin, veena, and mridangam, in both group and solo settings. The program will be organized as a community event in a festive atmosphere with attendance and participation from children and adults alike. © Copyright 2001 Indian Music Society of Minnesota |
