with Abhijit Banerjee (Tabla),

Friday, September 27, 7:30pm

HHH Cowles Auditorium, University of Minnesota

Abhijit Banerjee and Purbayan Chatterjee

About the artists:

Purbayan Chatterjee has been acknowledged by maestros as one of the best young sitarists of India. His style of playing, of which Pt. Nikhil Banerjee was the exponent, is the most aesthetically satisfying combination of the best facets of "Dhrupad" and "Khayal"; the depth and discipline of the "Dhrupad" is interspersed with the lyricism of "Khayal". In a display of maturity, Purbayan is able to combine technical brilliance and virtuousity of the highest level with depth and serenity.

Abhijit Banerjee received his initial training in tabla from Tushar Kanti Bose and then from Manik Pal. Later on he became a disciple of the legendery tabla maestro, the late Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh. He represents the Farukhabad gharana of tabla, and is considered as one of the gharana's leading exponents. He is recognized for his skillful accompaniment as well as for his solo performances. He has been on concert tours with most of the leading classical musicians of India.
