About the Artists

Aarti Ankalikar Tikekar:

Gifted with a richly timbered and wide ranging voice, Aarti Ankalikar Tikekar has emerged as an outstanding exponent of North Indian Khayal singing, highly regarded by both listeners and fellow musicians. Her mellifluous, resonant voice backed up by an infectious personality and compelling stage presence transform her recitals into an absorbing audio visual experience.

Aarti began her musical journey at the tender age of 10 under the tutelage of the late Pandit Vasantrao Kulkarni an exponent the Agra and Gwalior schools of vocal music. Throughout her career she has been fortunate enough to have received training from some of India's most influential gurus, who have groomed Aarti in their respective styles of singing. Her performances bring forth an exciting aesthetic fusion of all of India's most revered vocal gharanas. After her initial apprenticeship, Aarti was fortunate enough to receive training with one of India's female musical legends, Kishori Amonkar, a doyen of the Jaipur Atrauli Gharana, characterised by a smooth lilting, melodic quality. For a brief period she also benefited from the guidance of Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar. She is continuing her training under Pandit Dinkar Kaikini. All of her teachers have influenced Arati's style. Listening to her performances one sees a very pleasant blend of the various gharanas represented by her teachers. Endowed with a rich resonant voice, Arati's performances are marked by an excellent command over both the rhythm and the melody.

Aarti has performed at many prestigious conferences in India, such as the Sawai Gandharva Mahotsav (Pune), the Malhar Utsav (Delhi), Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor Pranam (Bhopal), the Gunidas Sangeet Sammelan (Mumbai), the Dover Lane Festival (Calcutta), the Shankarlal Festival (Delhi) and at sabhas organized by the Madras Music Academy (Chennai). She has been on concert tours in USA, Canada, UK and UAE.

A recipient of a Central Government scholarship (1975-80) and the Surashri Kesarbai Kerkar scholarship (1980-82), Aarti stood first in the All India Radio competition held during 1983 and 1984 in Indian classical music, thumri and gazal and was awarded gold medal in all the three categories.

Aarti has her to her credit a number of audio cassettes and CD recordings marketed by HMV, Polygram and Rhythm House. She was the main playback singer for the Sham Benegal film, "Sardari Begum." This will be her fourth concert tour of USA.

Harshad Kanetkar

Harshad Kanetkar, a young talented Tabla player from India, began his initial training in Tabla at the age of five with Shri Pandurang Mukhade. After this introdution to the world of Table, he has continued to receive intensive training under Shri Ramdas Palsule and Pandit Suresh Talwalkar for over twelve years.

Harshad is one of the few Tabla players of his generation who has equally adept and versatile in the art of accompanying vocal, instrumental and dance. Crispness and clarity of his technique and a total command of rhythm are the classic hallmarks of his style. He has accompanied many leading artists like Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Rashid Khan, Veena Sahastrabuddhe, Shama Bhate (Kathak), Ashwhini Bhide-Deshpande, Aarti Tikekar, Kala Ramnath and Sanjeev Abhyankar at prestigious music conferences all over India. He has also traveled and performed extensively in U.S., Canada, Europe and the Middle East. His recordings include solo works and fusion of musical traditions of the East and West.
