About the Artists:

Sandipan Samajpati  

Endowed with a rich and mellifluous voice, Sandipan Samajpati, one of the finest vocalists in India today, shot into prominence in the early nineties. His development of the different ragas in their purest forms, together with his thoughtful application of emotion and sentiment poured into them, has given his music a rare dimension. Son of Shri Sukumar Samajpati, a footballer of international repute and himself a musician and Smt Soma Samajpati, a distinguished academic, Sandipan has imbibed his family’s rich and diverse traditions, where creativity and its articulate expression always found predominance.

An A-Grade vocalist of All India Radio and Indian National Television (Doordarshan),  and who likes to be perceived as, principally, representing the Kirana Gharana, Sandipan has received extensive training for over two decades from the reputed and much revered  Pandit Manas Chakraborty, son of the legendary vocalist the late  Sangeetacharya Tarapada Chakraborty. He has also received valuable training from the highly respected and the noted Vaggeyakara  Pandit Ram Ashraye Jha, formerly Head of the Department of Music of the Allahabad University

Accolades and recognition came Sandipan’s way aptly and automatically, with the  Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s National Academy of Performing Arts, awarding him in 2006 with the First Ustad Bismillah Khan Award  in Hindustani Vocal Music which was preceded by a number of other prestigious awards like the  Aditya Vikram Birla Kala Kiran Award, the Surrendra Paul Award,  Ramkrishna Bua Smriti Puraskar and the  Jadubhatta Puraskar and the Sangeet Ratna Puraskar. Besides, Sandipan has performed in several leading Music Festivals and Conferences in India, captivating the audience with the lilting melody of his voice and his musicality. Some of the reputed concerts where he has performed are:  Sawai Gandharva Music Festival  (Pune), The Dover Lane Music Conference ( Calcutta),  IMG ( St. Xaviers) Conference (Mumbai), SRA (ITC) Sangeet Sammelan ( Calcutta), Saptak Music Conference (Ahmedabad), Dinanath Mangeshkar Festival ( Goa), Vishnu Digambar Jayanti Samaroha ( Delhi), West Bengal State Music Academy Conference, Salt Lake City Music Conference ( Calcutta), Uttarpara Sangeet Chakra Annual Conference ( West Bengal) , Nikhil Banerjee Memorial Conference  (West Bengal) National Centre for performing Arts( Mumbai) and many other reputed  conferences. Sandipan has also performed at the very prestigious Akashbani (AIR) Sangeet Sammelan in 2006 and 2009.

Also, for the last several years, Sandipan has extensively toured the USA, Australia and various countries of Europe like Germany, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden and England. Besides, he has  several CD and cassette albums to his credit, that were released by reputed companies like the HMV Saregama and Sagarika, which received widespread recognition from the listeners.

Music apart, Sandipan has  graduated in Economics from the University of Calcutta and completed his  Master Degree in vocal music from the Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta, securing a First Class.

Kamlesh J Desai


A sincere passion for music led Kamalesh J. Desai, a Chicago-based financial sector professional, to receive substantive guidance from Pandit V. G. Karnand and Shri P. Upadhyay on Harmonium and other instruments. A disciplined musical practice that Kamalesh has been immersed in for long makes him an appreciated Harmonium artist in the Chicagoland area. He has offered accompaniment to musicians of wide-ranging genres encompassing Indian classical music, semi-classical and devotional music, ghazals etc. Kamalesh has accompanied artists like Pandita Girija Devi, Late Shri Atul Desai, Dr. Shyamala Bhave, Shri P. Upadhyay, Shri Manhar Udhas, to name a few.


Hindole Majumdar

Hindole has had his training from Sri Shibsankar Karmakar, a worthy disciple of late Ustad Karamatullah Khan and has been taking advanced talims from the Tabla Maestro Pandit Sankha Chatterjee of the Punjab Gharana, the school made famous by Ustad Allah Rakha Khan. He has also been receiving training in the South Indian Rhythm style from Vidwan Pandit S.Shekhar, the great Mridangam exponent. Hindole has been appreciated by Tabla Maestros like Pandit Swapan Chowdhury, Pandit Kumar Bose, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Ustad Sabir Khan, to name a few . He is a regular artist of the All India Rado and National Television (Doordarshan).

Hindole, at this young age, has already accompanied eminent musicians like  Sitar Maestros -  Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Shujaat Khan, Ustad Irshad Khan, Sri Partha Bose and Pandit Ganesh Mohan; Pandit Vishwamohan Bhatt - Mohan Veena Exponent; Sarod Maestros - Ustad Aashish Khan, Pandit Kamal Mallick , Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar and Sri Alam Khan; Santoor Exponents - Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya, Rahul Sharma, Nandkishore Muley and Satish Vyas;  Bansuri (Flute) Artistes - Pandit Rupak Kulkarni and Sri Pravin Godkindi;  Vocalists - Smt. Veena Sahasrabudhe, Smt. Tanima Thakur, Sri Sanjeev Abhyankar and Sri Sandipan Samajpati.

He has also been invited to perform in a considerable number of concerts organized by the "SPICMACAY''. Hindole's performances as a soloist as well as an accompanist have always touched hearts of music lovers all over the globe. He has travelled extensively throughout India and abroad.

He has travelled to countries like Singapore, Malayasia, Sultanate of Oman (Muscat), Germany, France, England to name a few.  He has also been regularly traveling to USA and Canada for teaching assignments and concerts.

The Recital Hall is located just behind the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium  in the campus of St. Catherine University (2004 Randolph Ave, Saint Paul, MN 55105). The Recital Hall is Building 24 in the campus map (see below).

Driving Directions: 

  • From I-94 going E: Take Cretin Avenue exit. South (right) on Cretin to Randolph Avenue. East (left) on Randolph to Cleveland Avenue intersection. Stay on Randolph. Enter at GATE 3 on Randolph.
  • From I-94 going W: Take Snelling Avenue (US 51) exit. South (left) on Snelling Avenue to Randolph. West (right) on Randoplh to Fairview/Randolph intersection. Stay on Randolph. Enter at GATE 3 on Randolph.
  • From I-35E: Exit on Randolph Avenue. Proceed West to Fairview/Randolph intersection. Stay on Randolph. Enter at GATE 3 on Randolph.
  • From I-35W: Exit on 94 eastbound to Cretin Avenue exit. South on Cretin to Randolph Avenue. East on Randolph to Cleveland Avenue intersection. Stay on Randolph. Enter at GATE 3 on Randolph.

Gate 3 is located between Cleveland and Fairview and is nearest to the intersection of Randolph and Prior Avenues. The Recital Hall is located right behind the better known O'Shaughnessy auditorium. Parking is free after hours and on weekends.
